The Dispenser Case Study
The Alto on Bourke Hotel
The Alto Hotel on Bourke is one of Melbourne's newest boutique four star apartment hotels. More importantly, it is one of the few hotels in Melbourne that is totally environmentally friendly, creating national attention.
The Alto Hotel is partially built within the old heritage listed Australian Railways Union head office building and combined with modern construction, a beautiful four-star property has been created.
When taking on the construction of the Alto, owners Ricardo and Suzanne Krauskopf used their 38 years of hospitality experience to ensure the property would be viewed as environmentally friendly accommodation, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a green star rating from AAA Tourism.
In order to comply with AAA Tourism's Green Star Rating classification, the hotel had to install certified products and solutions to save electricity, water, reduce carbon emissions, waste and energy.
Rather than stocking individual personal shampoo, conditioner and bodywash bottles, they installed re-fillable, pump-action, toiletry dispensers from Better Living Products Pty Ltd. and ensured all chemicals used in them are biodegradable.
Ricardo explained, "The problem with the miniature plastic bottles is that most of them are not made of biodegradable plastic and 100% of them will ultimately end up in landfill , most likely with more than 30% of their chemical content still in them"
"These dispensers do not need filling every day, in fact, they are only filled as required. They have saved us money by reducing housekeeping time, reducing waste and enabling us to buy liquids in bulk, but more importantly they have helped save the environment"
